Womens History Month

Hi Maurice, For more than a century, women workers have been at the forefront of America’s union movement: at the bargaining table, on picket lines, in state legislatures, and in courtrooms and the streets, fighting for fair wages, quality benefits and union recognition. Women of color, in particular, have long spearheaded movements at the intersection of racial and economic justice. You can’t tell the story of worker power in America without talking about the crucial role women have played. Sometimes it can feel like we’re taking one step forward and two steps back. Women are leaving the workforce at alarming rates after years of progress toward equity at work and at home. The pay gap is widening for the first time in 60 years.

The good news? Despite relentless attacks, nearly half a million workers organized in 2025. Women make up half our labor movement—making us the largest organization of working women in the country. And when we stand together, we have the power to make real change and ensure we keep moving forward. AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler recorded a message thanking working women around the world. Take a look and share her video wishing women a Happy International Women’s Day!  This month, we are standing strong with players in the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) who are currently at the bargaining table for a new contract; players in the Professional Women’s Hockey League Players Association (PWHLPA) who just joined the AFL-CIO last week; and the women and men of the Berkeley (California) Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 1078, who just reached a tentative agreement on a new contract that increases the school district’s health care contribution. From hospitality workers to health care workers to Starbucks baristas to federal workers, the list goes on.  These are the kinds of fights that help all working families. When women win, we all win. And when working women stand hand in hand alongside their union brothers, sisters and siblings, we know the labor movement is unstoppable. We’re highlighting union women making a difference for their colleagues and their families with a new profile added each day this month.  Thank you for standing up for economic fairness and justice, both inside and outside the workplace, every single day.  Happy Women’s History Month.  Team AFL-CIO
